Konkola Copper Mine acting CEO Malcolm Mewett has emphasized the critical role of leadership in mine rescue operations.

Speaking at the Mine Rescue teams interactive session in Chingola, Mr. Mewett stressed that effective leadership, particularly from the team captain, is key to fostering trust and adaptability within the team.

“Don’t be distracted by little things, just follow the captain’s instruction,” he advised.

Mr. Mewett shared personal experiences of fatalities and incidents, highlighting the gravity of mine rescue work.

“The ultimate goal of mine rescue is to support peers in the industry and save lives,” he added.

The team is gearing up for the International Mine Rescue Competition, a platform that offers networking, learning opportunities, and connects with international teams.

“I’m glad our teams are taking part in this elite competition,” Mewett said, adding it’s a chance “to meet like-minded individuals, including international teams, and provides valuable learning and observation opportunities, especially for ladies’ teams.”

Team Captain Ernest Phiri expressed confidence in the team’s skills mix, saying, “We possess the good mix of skills.”

Konkola Mine Rescue Manager, Gabriel Zulu welcomed Mr. Mewett’s support, stating the team is ready for the competition.
